Rate review at renewal

Ongoing work needs a regular rate check. Give clear notice before renewal. Put the new number in writing.

Short answer

How do freelancers raise retainer rates at renewal?

Review the rate before the renewal date. Give written notice with enough lead time, for example thirty days. State the new monthly fee or hourly rate and when it starts. If they decline, decide whether to continue at the old rate for one more term or to end the engagement cleanly.

Why review on a schedule

Costs rise. Your skill rises. An old retainer can quietly underpay you.

A yearly or twice-yearly review is easier than a sudden jump.

Give real notice

For example, write thirty days before renewal with the new rate and start date.

Attach an updated one-page rate card or proposal addendum.

If they say no

Offer a smaller scope at the old rate, a phased increase, or a clean end date.

Do not silently absorb a year of underpayment.

FAQ

How often should I review?

Once a year is common. Twice a year if costs move fast.

Do I need a new contract?

An addendum or renewal email can be enough if your contract allows it. Match your agreement.
